Did you all see that Andrea Mowry came out with a new pattern yesterday? It’s a cool ribbed beanie. Did you also see that she’s going to do a 4 Day KAL over Memorial Day weekend? She’s encouraging knitters to cast on Friday and finish by Monday. Guess what everyone? I’m totally going to do it. I have to! My love of this little knitting adventure is two-fold!
- The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is my FAVORITE MOVIE EVER. I’m a big fan of Wes Anderson flicks. They’re all about the same thing: the protagonist is kind of a jerk and hits somewhere close to rock bottom. All the while, the protagonist’s friends are there for them, and they manage to flourish again with the help of their friends. I probably love The Life Aquatic a bit more because Steve Zissou (played by Bill Murray) reminds me a bit of my dad, and all of the characters have great uniforms with red knit beanies. It is my constant knitting quest to knit a Zissou hat in some form. Maybe there’s a variation on a theme (perhaps I alter the color or it’s a tight cabled beanie with a little extra fabric up top…), but I like to wear Team Zissou hats all winter long. This is a very long way of me telling you all why I love ribbed knit hats so much.
- I love love LOVE two-color brioche, and Mowry’s new hat (called Harlow) is knit up in two-color brioche. I know some people find brioche and particularly two-color brioche a bit maddening, but I love it. I honestly think learning brioche made me a more patient knitter… because I made a bunch of mistakes while learning it… and it’s really difficult to fix mistakes in the brioche stitch. Now that I’ve done brioche and two-color brioche enough, I find it to be a relaxing and soothing stitch.
Considering my two-pronged love of this project, how can I resist? Why wouldn’t I want to spend my weekend doing a super relaxing knit and making a Team Zissou hat. I’m IN!
OK, so Mowry’s pattern is two color, and she has it pictured using two solid yarns or one solid and one variegated yarn. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but I’m thinking that I’ll pair Brooklyn Tweed’s Loft (her #1 suggestion for solid colors) with some of our gorgeous new shades from Baah’s La Jolla or some crazy fun sock yarn like Fiber Seed’s or Cascade’s Heritage Wave or something like that. I’m not sure if I’m going to like mixing a toothy yarn like Loft with something so smooth like La Jolla! Guess what? I don’t care! It’s just a hat and if it’s absolutely unwearable it’s no big deal. Of course I’ll use some shade of red in there… Anyone feel like joining me on this holiday-weekend knitting adventure? If you do, please tag @woolandgrace so we can see what you’re up to. You can bet I’m going to Instragram the heck out of my weekend’s knitting!
PS, this little project makes a reversible hat. F-U-N FUN!
