Get Involved and Knit a Knocker
This year and in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, we are organizing a Knitted Knockers drive. Knitted Knockers, you ask? It’s just what it sounds like, but it’s even better than you might think.
Knitted Knockers are hand knit, special, soft, lightweight breast prosthetics that are very comfortable for women who have undergone mastectomies, lumpectomies and radiation, or are undergoing reconstruction. They are designed to be worn with any bra, sports bra, mastectomy bra or post-op camisole. They can be adjusted over time, as its poly fill stuffing can be added and removed through a simple drawstring opening. Knitted Knockers can be made in any size. Made of a soft, non-wool yarn, Knitted Knockers have a list of approved yarns for this special item, so that it is most comfortable and easy to care for. Finished Knockers can be sent in to the organization with or without fill (if you’d like to save on shipping), and Knockers are provided for FREE to women requesting them.
Knit and crochet patterns exist for Knitted Knockers, and they can be made with double pointed needles in the round, or on flat needles with a seam. Several patterns exist to ease you through the process of making it, and links are included at the bottom of this post. While they can be made in any color, they receive the most requests for neutral colors in pairs.
We’ll be hosting a Knitted Knockers Drive from now and through October. During this time, Cascade’s Ultra Pima (a Knitted Knockers approved yarn) will be on sale for 25% off! Also, for every Knitted Knocker donation we receive, Wool & Grace will be making a donation for breast cancer awareness and research. We will also be hosting two free weekend workshops to teach our knitters how to get started on these projects, and how to read their Knitted Knockers knitting patterns. More than anything, these workshops will be a fun opportunity to meet and knit with other people who support breast cancer awareness.
We all know women affected by breast cancer, and there so much all of us can do to help. This is a unique and fun way to get involved, on your on or as a group. Your participation and donation will give love, comfort and confidence to a woman going through a trying transition in her life. Please join us in our enthusiasm and make some Knockers with us!
